Benefit of Low-Fat & Low Sugar Diet

Eating less fat and sugar is healthy in many ways. It can help you lose weight or keep a steady weight. Foods high in sugar or fat have many calories, so cutting them can make you eat fewer calories and lose weight (1). People who eat less sugar often weigh less than those who eat a lot of sugar (1).

A low-fat, low-sugar diet is also good for your heart and cholesterol. Fat from meat, cheese and butter can raise bad cholesterol in your blood. Too much bad cholesterol can lead to heart disease (2). By eating less fat and choosing foods like vegetables, fish or vegetable oils, you can lower bad cholesterol and lower heart disease risk (2). Cutting sugar helps too, because it stops you from gaining extra weight that can hurt your heart.

This diet also helps control blood sugar and lowers diabetes risk. Eating a lot of sugar makes blood sugar go up and down, and over time this raises the chance of type 2 diabetes. Lowering sugar intake, especially from sweets and fizzy drinks, keeps blood sugar steadier and reduces diabetes risk (3).

High-sugar and high-fat diets can cause fat to build up in the liver (fatty liver disease). Research shows that cutting added sugars greatly improves liver fat and health (4).

Overall, a diet low in fat and sugar supports better long-term health. It helps keep your weight, cholesterol and blood sugar in a healthy range, reducing future risk of diseases like heart disease and diabetes (2,3).
