How do I know if I’m suitable for treatment?

Following a review of your medical history and completion of the clinical assessment, we will determine whether you meet the NICE guideline criteria for pharmacological weight management.

Which weight-loss medications do you prescribe?

The most suitable medication will be determined based on your medical history, clinical assessment, and personal preferences.

Are the Weight Management medicines safe?

All medicines can have side effects, although many people take them without any problems. Some side effects may occur early, while others can develop later over time.
Everyone responds to medicines differently, so the type and likelihood of side effects can vary from person to person. This depends on factors such as your individual biology, medical history, lifestyle, age, and how the medicine is used.
We will always consider these factors carefully and discuss any potential risks with you, so you can feel informed and confident about your treatment.

How often will I be reviewed?

We will review your progress 4 weeks after your initial appointment, then again at 3 months and 6 months.
If you are feeling well after the first 4 weeks and wish to continue treatment, we can authorise a repeat prescription, which you can easily request through our website.  Please click here to Order Repeat Prescription

Do I need blood tests?

Yes, we will check your kidney function at your initial appointment and then once a year thereafter.

Some weight management medicines are processed by the kidneys, so it’s important to ensure your kidney function is within a safe range before and during treatment.

This test is provided free of charge, so there is no cost to you.

How quickly will I see results?

Your kidney function test results will be available within 10–15 minutes.

What shall I do if I experience side effect(s)?

West Midlands Institute for Weight Management does not provide diagnosis or the treatment of diseases, disorders, or injuries.

If you experience any concerning or severe side effects, please seek appropriate medical help by contacting your GP, NHS 111, visiting urgent care (such as New Cross Hospital or Phoenix Health Centre Walk-in Centre), or calling 999 in an emergency.

However, we are keen to learn about any side effects you may experience. This helps us improve our care and, where possible, reduce the risk for other patients. We therefore encourage you to let us know if you experience any side effects, as this contributes to our ongoing learning and improvement.

Can I stop treatment at any time?

Some medicines can cause problems if they are stopped suddenly.

For your safety, please do not stop any medication without first speaking to your GP or the clinician who prescribed it, so we can ensure it is done safely and appropriately.

Is this a replacement for my GP?

West Midlands Institute for Weight Management is not a replacement for your GP. It is here to support you in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
